Best known for her work documenting the political upheaval in Central America during the 1970s and '80s, American photographer Susan Meiselas has been at the forefront of ethical debates around documentary photography for most of her career. Through close engagement with subjects such as war and exploitation, she has interrogated her own relationship to what she's photographing, the circulation and dissemination of these images, and the pivotal questions around social and cultural representation and memory. Her influential contribution to the way audiences approach and engage with photography is as vital and resonant today as it was forty years ago.

The perfect primer on acclaimed French artist Sophie Calle.
Sophie Calle is a French writer, photographer, installation artist and conceptual artist. Her work is distinguished by its use of arbitrary sets of constraints, and frequently depicts human vulnerability, and examines identity and intimacy. She is renowned for her detective-like ability to follow strangers and investigate their private lives, which she has deployed in her acclaimed works Suite Venitienne, The Hotel and Address Book. She has had major exhibitions all over the world, including at the 2007 Venice Biennale, the Whitechapel Gallery in London, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, and has worked closely with the writer Paul Auster. The Guardian called her 'the Marcel Duchamp of dirty laundry', and she was among the names in Blake Gopnik's list 'The 10 Most Important Artists of Today', with Gopnik arguing, 'It is the unartiness of Calle's work - its refusal to fit any of the standard pigeonholes, or over anyone's sofa - that makes it deserve space in museums.' -

An appreciation of the life and art of Tove Jansson, creator of the Moomin books, which are adored by children and adults across the globe.
This book provides fresh insights and a deeper appreciation of the life and art of Tove Jansson (1914-2001), one of the most original, influential and perennially enjoyed illustrators of the 20th century. Jansson's flourishing Moomin books are examined in detail, as are her interpretations of such classics as Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and The Hunting of the Snark, and J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit.
Born in Helsinki among the Swedish-speaking Finnish minority, Jansson was brought up with a love for making art and stories in a supportive artistic family. Her first illustrated tales were published when she was fourteen years old. From a year later until 1953, she drew humorous and political cartoons as well as striking front covers for the satirical magazine Garm, responding to the Second World War and its aftermath as she developed from art student to painter and muralist, bohemian and lesbian. This book also explores the emergence of her Moomin world, appearing in her first children's book in 1945 and then in newspaper strips. These would lead to her being headhunted by the London Evening News, the world's biggest-selling evening paper, to write and draw a daily Moomin newspaper cartoon. This body of work is one of her great achievements, expanding her stories, settings and cast and invigorating her drawing and writing. Jansson also wrote many novels, documented here along with personal commentaries from her own writings. -

"One advantage I think is my design sense. When you're drawing, every element, every line, makes up what it is; and there is a feeling of that when I think about a shot." - Tim Burton
Tim Burton is the creative force behind some of the most celebrated films of the last four decades. He is internationally recognised as a master of the comically grotesque and the endearingly misfit. The World of Tim Burton will invite visitors into his world through an exploration of the design of his unique aesthetic. While most well-known for his cinematic work, this show will display the full extent of his production as an illustrator, painter, photographer, and author, as well as exploring some of the key collaborations that have helped shape his world. As a multi-disciplinary artist, his creations extend beyond the limits of mediums and formats. Drawn from Tim Burton's personal archive and representing the artist's creative output from childhood to the present day, this exhibition of drawings, paintings, photographs, sketchbooks, props, sculptural installations, storyboards and set design focuses on the recurrent visual themes and motifs found in the distinctive characters and worlds found in Burton's art and films.
This book will be the official catalogue for the exhibition, as well as the first publication to explore the relationship between Tim Burton's artistic creations and the world of design. The reader will be invited into an examination of what is now broadly referred to as the 'Burtonesque', exploring his iconic style and the impact his unique design aesthetic has on broader visual culture. The catalogue will unpack Tim Burton's distinctive visual language, exploring the intersection of gothic, carnivalesque and fantastical elements that define his cinematic masterpieces. Insightful essays by design experts and film critics, interspersed with images featured in the exhibition, will offer a deeper understanding of the director's creative process, making this catalogue an homage to the role that design practice plays in the hauntingly beautiful worlds he creates. -

This volume brings together the most important photographs from the long career of Louis Stettner. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1922, Stettner's life would span nearly a century, his work reflecting the unique vision of one of the twentieth-century's master photographers.
Organized chronologically, Louis Stettner presents approximately 190 photographs from Stettner's career, featuring his iconic images of New York and Paris; the architecture of urban wonders such as Penn Station, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the New York City subway; as well as candid and empathetic street photographs of the people who inhabit these metropolitan centers.
While celebrated for his black-and-white works, the book also includes Stettner's works in color, many previously unpublished and unknown. The authors investigate the influence of his experiences as a photographer in World War II on his life and work. They also explore his experience with the celebrated Photo League cooperative and his relationships with photographers such as Weegee, Sid Grossman, Ruth Orkin, and Berenice Abbott.

The paint-loaded palettes of fifty world-renowned artists are displayed alongside the paintings the artists created using those hues, and the colours and brushstrokes employed are analysed to uncover surprising new stories about each artist and their work.
Presented broadly chronologically, the artists featured in this revelatory book range from those working in the 17th century to the present day, including Artemisia Gentileschi, Paul Cézanne, Berthe Morisot, Vincent Van Gogh, Wassily Kandinsky, Georgia O'Keeffe and Bridget Riley. Each artist's palette - whether photographed or visible in self-portraits - is paired with one or more works by the artist that reflect the colours of the paint remaining on the palette. Colour expert and art historian Alexandra Loske skilfully analyses each artist's colour palette and brushstrokes to reveal not only exactly how they used colour in their work but also to tell the story of their journey with colour and the influence of their approach on the wider culture to which they belonged. For example, Georges Seurat meticulously arranged the paints on his palette in prismatic order, isolating the colours and pairing each with a blot of white paint. His pointillist technique was equally apparent on his palette and his canvas. Kerry James Marshall uses blots of zinc white and smears of pale pink on the surfaces of symbolically oversized white palettes held by black artists in his portraits, raising provocative questions about the role of colour in the story of black history and white western art.
The Artist's Palette will appeal to an art history audience, a wider audience eager to learn more about the use of colour by the great artists and amateur painters looking for inspiration in the creation of their own work. -

A substantial new appraisal of Consuelo Kanaga, one of the pioneers of modern American photography.
Consuelo Kanaga (1894-1978) was one of the pioneers of modern American photography. Beginning her career in 1915 as a photojournalist for the San Francisco Chronicle, Kanaga quickly became a highly skilled darkroom technician, developing a distinctly artistic aesthetic style inspired by the photography of Alfred Stieglitz. Over the next six decades, she produced beautifully composed images over a wide range of subjects, characterized by an abiding interest in the social conflicts of her time, including urban poverty, workers' rights, racial segregation, and prevailing inequality. She became especially known for her emotional and introspective portraits of African Americans, which combined modernist formal technique and radical documentary commentary.
Featuring two hundred photographs from the collection of the Brooklyn Museum, this substantial new appraisal of Consuelo Kanaga's work establishes her place as one of America's most vital twentieth-century photographers.
Published to accompany a major touring exhibition from 2024-2026 at Fundación MAPFRE, Barcelona; Fundación MAPFRE, Madrid; SanFrancisco Museum of Modern Art; and Brooklyn Museum, New York. -

Linder : Danger came smiling

Major survey of the artistic provocateur and trailblazer Linder (b.1954, Liverpool). Offers an illuminating overview of the past 50 years of this iconic artist's career, exploring the full range of Linder's thought-provoking work and underscoring the experimental and feminist impulses of her practice.
Linder first emerged in the late 1970s as a prominent figure within the dynamic landscapes of punk and post-punk music; her photomontage on the cover of Buzzcocks' single 'Orgasm Addict' in 1977 became an iconic image of the punk scene. Following her punk period, Linder went on to become an internationally recognised artist renowned for her multifaceted practice. Her journey has been one of relentless exploration, venturing into realms as varied as fashion, music, performance, perfume, textiles, and film. At the heart of her explorations lies a profound engagement with the poetics of protest, where artistic inquiry intertwines seamlessly with cultural critique.
Throughout her career, Linder has used photomontage as a potent instrument for dissecting and reshaping the portrayal and commercialisation of gender norms and sexual identity. Drawing from source materials extracted from magazines of the late twentieth century, she exposes the weighty stereotypes imposed on both ends of the gender spectrum: automobiles, DIY culture and pornography for men; fashion and domesticity for women. In addition to using found images from magazines, Linder has also used photographs of herself taking on various feminine personae, which navigate concepts of personal invention and the performative dimensions of identity. Her art is informed by a rich tapestry of influences spanning religious art, surrealism, mysticism, and the ever-evolving landscape of social media.
This volume - with new essays by Rachel Thomas, Marina Warner and Chris Kraus, and an interview with the artist by Gillian Fox - accompanies a major touring exhibition. -
