"One advantage I think is my design sense. When you're drawing, every element, every line, makes up what it is; and there is a feeling of that when I think about a shot." - Tim Burton
Tim Burton is the creative force behind some of the most celebrated films of the last four decades. He is internationally recognised as a master of the comically grotesque and the endearingly misfit. The World of Tim Burton will invite visitors into his world through an exploration of the design of his unique aesthetic. While most well-known for his cinematic work, this show will display the full extent of his production as an illustrator, painter, photographer, and author, as well as exploring some of the key collaborations that have helped shape his world. As a multi-disciplinary artist, his creations extend beyond the limits of mediums and formats. Drawn from Tim Burton's personal archive and representing the artist's creative output from childhood to the present day, this exhibition of drawings, paintings, photographs, sketchbooks, props, sculptural installations, storyboards and set design focuses on the recurrent visual themes and motifs found in the distinctive characters and worlds found in Burton's art and films.
This book will be the official catalogue for the exhibition, as well as the first publication to explore the relationship between Tim Burton's artistic creations and the world of design. The reader will be invited into an examination of what is now broadly referred to as the 'Burtonesque', exploring his iconic style and the impact his unique design aesthetic has on broader visual culture. The catalogue will unpack Tim Burton's distinctive visual language, exploring the intersection of gothic, carnivalesque and fantastical elements that define his cinematic masterpieces. Insightful essays by design experts and film critics, interspersed with images featured in the exhibition, will offer a deeper understanding of the director's creative process, making this catalogue an homage to the role that design practice plays in the hauntingly beautiful worlds he creates. -

An exquisite photography book featuring the collaborative work of fashion photographer Tom Kublin and renowned haute couture designer Cristóbal Balenciaga.
This is the first book to document the short yet prolific artistic career of fashion photographer and filmmaker Tom Kublin, and a celebration of his creative union with Cristóbal Balenciaga during the fashion house's postwar heyday in Paris. More than 140 photographs and film stills by Kublin capture the golden age of Balenciaga couture in the 1950s and 1960s, from the impeccable elegance of the collection shoots - including exclusive film footage of Balenciaga himself at work - to striking covers and editorials for high-profile magazines.
The book begins with a foreword by the photographer's daughter, María Kublin, and continues with a biography by Ana Balda, charting Kublin's career, his place in the artistic milieu of the European avant-garde, and his working relationship with Cristóbal Balenciaga. Miren Vives, head of the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum, also contributes.
Additional texts come from the fashion industry professionals who worked with and knew Kublin best: an interview with his partner and muse, the model Katinka Bleeker; memories from the Italian fashion photographer Gian Paolo Barbieri, who began his career as Kublin's assistant in Paris in the 1960s; and a piece by Lydia Slater, editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar UK, who looks back on Kublin's work for the magazine at a pivotal time in its history.
Honouring the successes and innovations of Tom Kublin's stellar career, this book records for posterity his contribution to fashion photography and to the iconography of the House of Balenciaga. -
A world of our own : Women artists against the odds
Frances Borzello
- Thames & Hudson
- 17 Octobre 2024
- 9780500297216
Women have always practiced as artists, but for centuries the art world considered them mere dilettantes. Their work was derided as second-rate, and they were considered intruders in a male profession. This study examines how, against the odds, they overcame these difficulties and shifts the focus away from women artists as "victims" to give an account of how they actually practiced their art. This stirring account documents the centuries- long struggle of gifted women who confronted the exclusionary tactics of a male-dominated art establishment but pressed ahead undaunted to gain acceptance as sought-after professionals.
Art historian Frances Borzello takes readers deep into the restricted world of women artists of the past, showing how diligently they trained themselves, set up studios, and pursued sympathetic patrons. Starting with Renaissance painters Sofonisba Anguissola and Lavinia Fontana, the book reconstructs the changing world of women artists as social attitudes evolved. Seventeenth-century painters Artemisia Gentileschi and Judith Leyster enjoyed success by depicting subjects relevant to women, as did eighteenth- century greats Angelica Kauffman and Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun with lucrative commissions. Further breakthroughs came in the nineteenth century as young hopefuls Mary Cassatt and Marie Bashkirtseff strove to be admitted to exhibiting societies and opened art schools. Finally, as equality for women advanced through the twentieth century, Augusta Savage, Georgia O'Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, Cindy Sherman, Mona Hatoum, and others led the way for today's talented women to secure their rightful place in the annals of art. Now fully revised and updated, Frances Borzello's engaging narrative continues to inspire. -

Most surveys of the history of art come neatly packaged. They are divided up into historic periods, artistic schools and movements, and the careers of individual painters. They may make the subject appear more manageable, but they are oversimplifications. In reality, movements and careers overlapped and intertwined, reacting to events in the world around them.
A Chronology of Art places developments in the art world into sharp focus. By prioritizing a purely chronological approach and side-stepping the clichés of conventional, academic pigeonholes, it presents an entirely fresh perspective on the subject. The book is structured around a central timeline, which features lavish illustrations of artworks, together with commentaries and additional information about the social, political, and cultural events of the period. The text is divided into four historical sections, becoming more detailed as it nears the present. From 1800 onward, each spread covers a five-year span, which is far more comprehensive than other surveys of this kind. The chronological spreads are interwoven with lively "In Focus" features, highlighting social, stylistic, and technical developments.

Elements : Chaos, Order and the Five Elemental Forces
Stephen Ellcock
- Thames & Hudson
- 17 Octobre 2024
- 9780500027844
A remarkable compendium of diverse and evocative imagery exploring the wide-ranging and profound associations of the five natural elements?masterfully curated by image alchemist and cult social media figure Stephen Ellcock.
Elements is an eclectic, evocative, and resoundingly beautiful treasury of imagery exploring depictions of the elemental forces that reveal their profound significance to ancient philosophers, alchemists, and astrologers, and modern artists, photographers, and scientists alike. Expertly curated, themed, and paired by image alchemist Stephen Ellcock, modern and visionary images are juxtaposed with the ancient and arcane, and the creative power of the elements is contrasted with the disastrous.
Following physician and occultist Robert Fludd's (1574-1637) order of the elements, Ellcock guides readers through a remarkable selection of images, ascending from earth through water, air, and fire before culminating in the most spiritual of the elements, celestial aether. He makes parallels with the five elements of eastern philosophies and their relationship to the chakras, acupuncture, and Chinese astrology. Introductory text explores how the elements have defined the components of Earth and the heavens since the ancient creation myths from around the world that first proposed the elements as the fundamental substances of the universe. Insightful panel texts punctuate the pages, illuminating key concepts. Pertinent literary, philosophical, and spiritual quotations are interspersed with the amazing images, presenting further commentary on the overarching themes.
At a time when humanity's relationship with the Earth teeters on the edge of catastrophe, this compendium of images exploring the natural elements envisions the possibility of earthly and spiritual harmony emerging from the chaos. -
A collection of 1,000 symbols and logotypes designed by the Pentagram partners from 1967 to the present.
The 1,000 marks featured in this book represent the diverse range of identity work created by Pentagram partners past and present. Since its inception over fifty years ago, Pentagram has designed marks for everyone from multinational corporations to start-ups, government agencies, nonprofits and social enterprises, clubs,
societies, individuals, districts and even whole countries. Regardless of your identity, an original mark that you can take ownership of is the starting point for communicating who you are and what you do.
There are many approaches to creating a distinctive logo, and all of them can be seen here, from bold typographic wordmarks to pictorial symbols and more abstract solutions. Printing them in black and white helps us see them in their purest form, highlighting the contrasts and occasional similarities between them.
The practice of design has changed radically since 1972, but its concerns remain the same. The deceptively simple exercise of designing a mark for a client, and the elusive quest for timelessness that it entails, are still central to the challenge that graphic designers face today. -
Of the 300 or so printed books Hokusai created in his lifetime, a huge proportion of these were dedicated drawing manuals, known as e-tehon (drawing models). They show not only Hokusai's great proficiency as a draughtsman, but also his wealth of ideas, and his sense of humour. This omnibus edition collects 15 volumes of Hokusai's e-tehon, which feature over 800 illustrations of instructions from 1812 to 1848. With every page faithfully reproduced against the orignal works, the book shows Hokusai's playful approach to drawing with amusing songs, pictures comprised of letterforms (a forerunner to today's emoji), modern designs for craftsmen, and, yes, dance moves. This all encompassing endeavour also includes a valuable work that he published just before his death. This was his magnum opus, serving to 'preserve everything I've learned'.

The colour of clothes : Fashion and dress in autochromes 1907-1930

- 12 Mars 2025
- 9780500025482
The story of photography's first practicable colour process is also the story of fashion as it evolved from the Edwardian era to the newfound fluidity and freedom of the 1920s.'Soon the world will be color-mad and Lumière will be responsible' Alfred Stieglitz, 1907These words announced the arrival of the autochrome, the colour process invented by the Lumière brothers that not only transformed photography, but also recorded the transition of fashion from Edwardian elegance towards a liberating modernity. The Colour of Clothes celebrates the unique beauty of the autochrome in around 370 images that reflect the broad sweep of its usage. Couturiers embraced the way the process showcased their exquisite designs to luminous perfection - among them Fortuny, Poiret, Doucet, Vionnet, Lucile, Chanel and Lanvin. Beyond the sphere of fashion, there are also examples from the Salon du Goût Français, France's virtual autochrome exhibition of luxury items, and Albert Kahn's Archives de la Planète, a bold attempt to record the world's cultures in autochromes. Some of the photographers involved may be famous in their field - Lartigue, Stieglitz, Steichen - though very often they are lesser known, and many are women who took to the process with panache. Whoever they were, they helped to immortalize one of photography's historic moments, when the camera first revealed the world of fashion as it was - in colour.

Richard Rogers on modern architecture
Richard Rogers

- Pocket Perspectives
- 11 Avril 2025
- 9780500029503
A manifesto for the future of architectural practice e and the necessity significance of good design to in modern life, by renowned British architect Richard Rogers.
Written during what architect Richard Rogers saw as a moment of crisis in modern architecture, this essay explores how the way we build-and live-could change for the better. Roger argues that poor design, monotony and inhuman scale are not the results of a lack of talent nor the failures of the Modern movement. Rather, these issues arise as a result of exploitative economic systems and businesses that put profit above people.
Best known for his work on the Pompidou Centre in Paris, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, and the Lloyd's building and Millennium Dome in London, Rogers was one of the most original and inventive architect of his time. He was a frequent commentator on the contemporary scene. As a practitioner, he was in the best position possible to appreciate how economic forces can create-or frustrate-good design. A succinct summary of his design philosophies, Richard Rogers on Modern Architecture continues to be a powerful manifesto. -
Impressionist and post-impressionist drawings
Christopher Lloyd
- Thames & Hudson
- 9 Janvier 2025
- 9780500298213
An authoritative analysis of the drawings (including watercolours and pastels) of twenty leading Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists in one magnificent volume.
Manet, Pissarro, Morisot, Cézanne, Seurat, Gauguin, Van Gogh and their colleagues made some of the most beautiful drawings in the history of art. This book sets drawings by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists in the context of late 19th-century France and explains why these particular works are as important as their paintings in the representation of modernity.
A new approach to materials and a wholly inclusive attitude to exhibitions gave drawings a more elevated status in this period than ever before, which avant-garde artists welcomed in their preference for scenes from contemporary life. For the first time also, painting and drawing shared the same stylistic principles of spontaneity, freer handling and lack of finish. Pastels by Degas, watercolours by Cézanne, pen-and-ink drawings by Van Gogh and mixed media works by Toulouse-Lautrec have an autonomy of their own, which proved instrumental in the development of modern art.
The distinguished art historian Christopher Lloyd examines the drawings of twenty of the leading Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists, highlighting an aspect of French avant-garde art that remains relatively unexplored and was of immense importance for the art movements that followed. -

With a comprehensive catalog of Mughal Glass objects gathered from both public and private collections around the world, this books stands as a definitive work, offering an authentic account that sheds light on a long-neglected aspect of Indian history.

Venice was a major centre of art in the Renaissance: the city where the medium of oil on canvas became the norm. The achievements of the Bellini brothers, Carpaccio, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese are a key part of this story. Nowhere else has been depicted by so many great painters in so many diverse styles and moods. Venetian views were a speciality of native artists such as Canaletto and Guardi, but the city has also been represented by outsiders: J. M. W. Turner, Claude Monet, John Singer Sargent, Howard Hodgkin, and many more.
Then there are those who came to look at and write about art. The reactions of Henry James, George Eliot, Richard Wagner and others enrich this tale. Nor is the story over. Since the advent of the Venice Biennale in the 1890s, and the arrival of pioneering modern art collector Peggy Guggenheim in the late 1940s, the city has become a shop window for the contemporary art of the whole world, and it remains the site of important artistic events.
In this elegant volume, Gayford - who has visited Venice countless times since the 1970s, covered every Biennale since 1990, and even had portraits of himself exhibited there on several occasions - takes us on a visual journey through the past five centuries of the city known as 'La Serenissima', the Most Serene. It is a unique and compelling portrait of Venice that will delight lovers of the city and lovers of its art. -
Our insatiable appetite for creativity in the kitchen-or around the open fire-is reflected in the fascinating objects explored in this book. Written by food writer Jenny Linford in collaboration with the British Museum, Repast focuses on artifacts in the museum's collection-from ancient clay cooking vessels to exquisite gold cups-spanning multiple continents and dating from prehistory to the modern day.
Taking a broadly chronological approach to the subject, the book is arranged into thirteen thematic chapters, starting with explorations of hunting and gathering and ending with the history of eating out; along the way, agriculture, alcohol, and cooking-among other subjects-are also investigated. Interspersed among the many remarkable objects examined in each chapter is a series of in-depth essays on such topics as tea (the world's most consumed drink after water), pork (one of the world's most consumed meats), and wheat (the source of 20 percent of the world's human calorie consumption), revealing the many social, cultural, and religious aspects of food.
Through a feast of words and images, Repast presents the irresistible, international story of food, drink, and the culinary arts. -

Ancient ivory ; masterpieces of the Assyrian empire
Georgina Herrmann
- Thames & Hudson
- 20 Juillet 2017
- 9780500051917
A beautifully produced guide to the Nimrud Ivories, one of the world's most spectacular collections of ancient ivory, now largely lost as a result of conflict in the Middle East.
Ivory is a wonderful material: tactile, beautiful, workable into many different forms and the strongest in the animal kingdom. Unfortunately for the elephant, it has been highly prized, by virtue of its rarity and the difficulty of acquiring it, from the Palaeolithic to the present day - indeed the Syrian elephant was hunted to extinction. However, it was during the early first millennium bc - the 'Age of Ivory' - that literally thousands of carved ivories found their way to the Assyrian capital city of Kalhu, or modern Nimrud, in northern Iraq. The majority were not made there, in the heart of ancient Assyria, but arrived as gift, tribute or booty gathered by the Assyrian kings from the small neighbouring states of the ancient Middle Eastern world, with the ivory itself probably sourced from the African elephant.

Quentin Blake : Not for art's sake
Quentin Blake, Claudia Zeff
- Thames & Hudson
- 15 Mars 2025
- 9780500966389
An art book about art that has a purpose, focusing on work by Quentin Blake that has been commissioned for a particular place or for a particular use.
Illustration is the most accessible visual artform and one that is used in all aspects of life; as Quentin Blake says, 'it is, if you like, a vernacular; it's a language that everybody understands. They may look at it and not think that they're looking at art, but it's having the effect on them of art. It's a language that everybody can read, so to speak.'
The work here shows Quentin using this vernacular to great effect and for very different purposes. In 2007 when Elizabeth II was opening the new Eurostar at St Pancras, Quentin was asked to hide an unsightly building across the road. He drew a 2-colour illustration on his drawing board showing a cast of characters that you might meet on a London Street; this was then blown up large enough to wrap a five-storey building. Since then he has found other opportunities for site specific work. Here are beautiful drawings of new-borns, mothers and fathers in a maternity hospital in France. Some images were etched, larger than life-size, on the external glass of the building as well as used in corridors and delivery suites. Most recently Quentin has done a series of drawings of everyday life for the family rooms for prisons across the UK. And charities have benefited from Quentin's enjoyment of drawing for a purpose; the Roald Dahl Marvellous Charity's logo and cards; for Comic Relief's two virtual pantomimes during lockdown, he drew the scene changes for Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast which were then auctioned; he created a rainbow for the NHS trust mug, and posters for Islington Libraries to encourage reading.
All these and more are featured in this charming book, which opens with a foreword by Quentin Blake, and includes photographs of him at work. -
