Born in Czechoslovakia in 1938, Koudelka left the country in 1968 and was awarded asylum in England. He had already produced two first-class reportages, one on the Prague Spring and its aftermath and the other on gypsy communities in Romania. This book confirms and illustrates Koudelka's powerful gift for exposing conditions in the European social, political, and physical landscape.

Josef Koudelka

Josef Koudelka est né en Tchécoslovaquie en 1938. Il débute une carrière d'ingénieur aéronautique avant de se consacrer à la photographie à la fin des années 1960. En 1968, il photographie l'invasion soviétique de Prague, ce qui lui vaudra de recevoir la médaille d'or Robert Capa, en 1969. Koudelka quitte son pays en 1970 devenant apatride, et rejoint peu après l'agence Magnum. Gypsies est publié en 1975, et sera suivi d'une dizaine d'ouvrages. L'œuvre du photographe a été couronnée de nombreux prix, tels le prix Nadar (1978), le Grand Prix national de la photographie (1989), le grand prix Cartier-Bresson (1991), et le prix international de photographie de la Fondation Hasselblad (1992). Ses travaux ont fait l'objet d'expositions dans le monde entier. En 2012, Koudelka a été promu au grade de commandeur de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
